What is a URL slug?
A URL slug is the human-readable, hyphenated tail portion of a web address that identifies a specific page or article (for example, in example.com/blog/10-best-tools, the slug is 10-best-tools). Slugs provide search engines and visitors with clear semantic context about page content.
SEO guidelines for clean slugs
- Use hyphens, not underscores: Search engines like Google interpret hyphens (
-) as word separators, whereas underscores (_) are often interpreted as joining words together. - Transliterate accented letters: Accented characters like
é,ñ, orüare automatically normalized to their plain Latin counterparts (e,n,u) to avoid percent-encoded characters in browser address bars. - Strip stop words: Short function words (such as
a,the,in,to) can be removed to keep permalinks concise and focused on high-intent target keywords.
